In this blog post, we will guide you through an uplifting and empowering warm-up routine that will unleash your true vocal potential. Section 1: Embracing the Purpose and Benefits of Vocal Warm-ups
Before embarking on your warm-up routine, let's explore the purpose and incredible benefits of vocal warm-ups. Warm-ups are an opportunity for growth, development, and improvement. They lay the foundation for success and provide an avenue to explore and expand your vocal capabilities. By embracing warm-ups as opportunities for improvement, you will unlock the door to vocal excellence.
Section 2: Designing an Invigorating Vocal Warm-up Routine
To create a warm-up routine that energizes and uplifts your voice, follow these simple guidelines then choose exercises that will help each area:
Alignment and Breathing Bliss: Start by connecting with your body and breath. Embrace a relaxed and balanced posture, allowing your breath to flow naturally and effortlessly. Take deep, full breaths, inhaling positivity and exhaling any tension or doubt.
The Power of Suspension: Experience the wonderful sensation of breath suspension. Inhale deeply and envision your breath floating and expanding within your body, ready to support your voice with effortless ease. Embrace the feeling of weightless energy that fuels your vocal journey.
Section 3: Essential Exercises for Vocal Brilliance - A focus on phonation
Let's dive into the heart of your warm-up routine, where we'll explore a range of exercises that will bring out the brilliance in your voice:
Embracing Freedom: Release tension in your face, jaw, neck, and shoulders. Relax your muscles and create a foundation of freedom and ease for your vocal expressions.
Harmony of Resonance: Engage in exercises that focus on resonating and exploring the unique qualities of your voice. Embrace the vibrant and resonant vibrations that emanate from your vocal instrument. Feel the fullness and richness as you explore the different resonating spaces within your body.
Flowing Agility: Nurture your vocal agility by incorporating exercises that allow your voice to flow effortlessly through various melodic patterns and intervals. Embrace the joy of exploring the limitless possibilities of your vocal range, moving with grace and agility.
Mindful Transitions: Practice smooth transitions between registers, seamlessly blending your chest voice, head voice, and any other vocal qualities you possess. Embrace the beauty of your voice as it effortlessly moves through these transitions, creating a harmonious and unified sound.
Section 4: Radiating Confidence and Vocal Freedom
As you conclude your warm-up routine, bask in the radiance of your vocal confidence and freedom. Feel the positive energy flowing through your body and embrace the limitless potential of your voice.
Complete Exercise Routine:
Perform the following exercises in sequence for a well-rounded vocal warm-up routine. Remember to refer to the earlier sections for detailed explanations and techniques for each exercise.
Align, Relax, and Breathe, Suspended Breath, Facial and Vocal Release
EXAMPLE: Start with a Proud and Regal stance, with a long back of the neck and short front of the neck. Take 5 slow, silent, deep and low in the lower abdomen and back, breaths in and out. Be aware of the facial muscles, tongue, jaw, neck and shoulders being very relaxed. Be aware of how your breath happens primarily BELOW the chest - and the lower, the better!
Phonation awareness - Gentle, buzzy tone on hums or lip trills
EXAMPLE: Hum gently and clearly on a single note in the middle of your range for 10-15 seconds. This should be done softly but very efficiently…using very little air. Do this at different areas of your range, but not too high or too low just yet - keep it in the comfortable range.
Connecting phonation across the range with slides (especially downward through transitions) - keeping the sense of forward placement and clear-buzzy (yet weightless) phonation.
EXAMPLE: Do a Lip Trill (or other SOVT technique - these will be described in a future blog post) 5-note scale up and down. I recommend a steady gliss that does not stop on each note but rather is a constant and steady slide THROUGH the notes. Then do a few lip trill downward slides through any register transitions spots such as from head voice to chest voice.
Onset exercises that practice the starting sound (onset) over and over throughout the range.
EXAMPLE: 1-3-5-3-1 on a chosen vowel such as “oh” - This is to be done in a steady staccato, in which the goal is for each short note should sound be unchanging and without any glottal starts - think “silent h”
Resonance Exploration - Focus on A) consistency across range, dynamics, vowels, B) Finding optimal resonance choices on self-selected pitches. C) Resonating “through” all word sounds.
EXAMPLE: Sing the words “one-two-three-four-five-four-three-two-one” while singing those scale degrees. FEEL the resonance of each vowel. Practice making them sound more alike than different - a “resonance legato” if you will. Then attend to the idea of connecting a consistent resonance through ALL the word sounds, not just the vowels. Work slowly so you can really focus and attend to sensations.
Agility and Range Extension - [This may be omitted and is best done when the voice is fully warm.] Keeping within your comfortable range at first is wise.
EXAMPLE: SChoose a vowel such as “ah,” and sing a rather quick (only as fast as you can execute properly) pattern such as 132435421, then ascend and descend by half steps and repeat several times. Take this pattern as high and as low as you can do so comfortably until your voice feels ready for more. Then, by all means, extend as far as you can!
Transition to music. When feeling ready, start easing into singing your repertoire. Pay attention to how your voice is feeling and always approach with a gentle clear tone throughout the warm up - avoiding ANY forcing or pushing.
