You're Not Tone Deaf - You Just Haven't Learned to Sing Yet!

Introduction

"Oh my dear, please don't sing! You can mouth the words, OK?"

There's a persistent myth that circulates in our culture, touching the hearts of millions who desire to express themselves through song. You've probably heard it or felt its effects: "Some people are just tone-deaf, and they can't learn to sing." But what if I told you that this is largely a misunderstanding? Today, we are going to debunk this myth and show how nearly everyone can learn to sing in tune.

Unveiling the Truth about Tone Deafness

True tone deafness, or amusia, is a rare neurological condition affecting only about 1.5% to 4% of the population. It is characterized by a difficulty in distinguishing different pitches, which is vital in singing. It is even possible (I think, likely) that percentage is even lower, but some diagnosed with the condition, may have simply not had enough exposer and guidance to help them in meaningful ways. Regardless, an inability to sing on your first, second, or even third try doesn't necessarily indicate tone deafness. It often signifies a lack of proper training. Let's remember that singing is a skill, and like any other, it needs practice, instruction, and patience.

Demystifying the Art of Singing

Many believe that singing well is a natural gift only granted to a few. This couldn't be further from the truth. Using modern technologies such as the Sing & See software or the TE Tuner app, combined with proven singing techniques like sirens and tuning drones, almost anyone can improve their singing ability to a level where they are able to enjoy singing with a choral group, or even solos if they choose.

From listening exercises that allow singers to discern minor differences in pitch, to practicing proper singing technique that involves feeling the sound rather than merely hearing it - the road to singing in tune can be broken down into manageable steps. Just as a marathoner trains to build stamina and speed, aspiring singers can train their ears and voices to hit the right notes, to sing with expression, and to blend their voice with others.

Anecdotes from a Life in Music Education

Throughout my years of teaching vocal music, and at Ted's Voice Academy, I've witnessed countless students transform their singing.

For instance, working with school choirs has shown me the power of practice and instruction. By using skill development activities and technology, such as aforementioned Sing & See, and TE Tuner, which give visual cues as well as auditory, in addition to targetted singing and tuning activities, scales, sirens, tuning drones, and more, I've seen youngsters who couldn't match a pitch become leading voices in the choir, and even outstanding soloists. I firmly believe there hasn't been a single student in my 30+ years of teaching who couldn't learn to sing well.

A Story of Perseverance and Adaptation

Another inspiring example is a 65-year-old lady who had completely lost her hearing early in life. Equipped with cochlear implants and a desire to sing, she sought my help. We collaborated with her audiologist, using the implant's software to fine-tune her perception of pitch. We also focused on feeling the vibration of sound and its interaction with other sounds. Her dedication and our collaborative approach helped her to learn to sing the songs she loved, proving that it's never too late to start AND more importantly, the main ingredient is quite possibly the desire to do so, and finding a good coach to help you on your journey!
